Frequently asked questions about Adult Eye Exams

How does the telehealth exam work, and is it as thorough as an in-person exam?
Yes, it's just as comprehensive! You'll be in our office with our trained technician who performs all the hands-on testing—checking your eye pressure, taking retinal photos, and running through visual acuity tests. Meanwhile, a licensed optometrist joins via live video and takes full remote control of our phoropter and equipment to conduct your refraction and evaluate your eye health in real-time. You'll see the doctor on screen, ask questions, and discuss your results just as you would face-to-face. The technology allows the optometrist to make precise adjustments and see everything they need to provide thorough care. The advantage? You get expert care without the months-long wait times, often with same-day or next-day appointments available right here in Mount Washington Valley.
How long does an adult eye exam take?
Most adult eye exams take 30–45 minutes from start to finish. This includes all testing, the doctor consultation, and time to discuss your results and next steps. If you're interested in trying contact lenses or need additional specialty testing, it may take a bit longer. We respect your time and run an efficient appointment while still being thorough—no rushing through important findings or cutting your questions short. If you have a tight schedule, let us know when you book and we'll do our best to accommodate. After your exam, you're welcome to browse our frame room if you need new glasses, or we can send your prescription so you can order at your convenience.
How often should adults get eye exams?
For most adults with healthy eyes, comprehensive exams every 1–2 years are recommended. If you wear contact lenses, annual exams are typically required to renew your prescription legally. Adults with risk factors—like diabetes, high blood pressure, family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration, or high prescriptions—should have annual exams or more frequent monitoring. If you're experiencing vision changes, eye strain from computer work, headaches, or dry eyes, don't wait for your regular schedule—book an appointment so we can address the issue. During your exam, we'll assess your individual needs and recommend a personalized follow-up timeline based on your eye health and lifestyle.
Can I get a contact lens prescription at this exam?
Yes! If you're already a contact lens wearer, we can often update your prescription during your comprehensive and contact lens exam. If you're new to contacts, we'll need to add a contact lens fitting, which includes measuring your eye's curvature, discussing your lifestyle needs (daily disposables vs. monthly lenses), and teaching you proper insertion, removal, and care. You'll typically receive trial lenses to ensure comfort and proper fit before we finalize your prescription. Contact lens prescriptions are separate from glasses prescriptions and legally expire after one year, so annual exams are required to continue purchasing lenses. Let us know when you schedule if you need contacts so we can allocate appropriate time for fitting.
What if my vision seems fine—do I still need an exam?
Absolutely. Many serious eye conditions—including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration—develop silently with no symptoms in the early stages. By the time you notice vision changes, significant damage may have already occurred. Comprehensive eye exams aren't just about updating your prescription; they're about screening for disease, checking eye pressure, examining the optic nerve, and photographing the retina to catch problems early when they're most treatable. Plus, even if your distance vision seems fine, you might benefit from glasses for computer work, night driving, or reading. Many adults don't realize how much clearer things could be until they experience properly prescribed lenses.
Will my insurance cover this exam?
Coverage varies by plan. Most vision insurance plans (like VSP, EyeMed, or Spectera) cover routine comprehensive eye exams, often with just a small copay. If we find a medical issue during your exam—such as signs of glaucoma, diabetic eye changes, or dry eye disease—those portions may be billed to your medical insurance instead. Some patients have both vision and medical coverage, and we'll use whichever provides the best benefit for your situation. If you're unsure about your coverage, call us at 603-662-0389 before your appointment. We'll verify your benefits and let you know what to expect for out-of-pocket costs, so you can make an informed decision with no surprises at checkout.
