Frequently asked questions about Contact Lenses
How often should I replace my lenses?
Contact lens replacement schedules are specifically designed for your eye health and comfort. Daily disposable lenses should be discarded after each single use—never reuse them. Bi-weekly lenses must be replaced every two weeks, and monthly lenses every 30 days from the day you first open them, regardless of how often you've worn them. Following your prescribed replacement schedule is crucial because protein deposits, lipids, and debris accumulate on lenses over time, increasing your risk of infection and reducing oxygen flow to your cornea. "Stretching" your wear schedule can lead to serious complications like corneal ulcers and infections.
Can I sleep in my lenses?
Most contact lenses are not approved for overnight wear. Sleeping in lenses dramatically reduces oxygen supply to your cornea, which can lead to corneal swelling, abnormal blood vessel growth, and serious infections. Even if you have contacts specifically FDA-approved for extended wear, you should only sleep in them if your eye doctor has evaluated your eyes and given explicit permission. Many eye care professionals still recommend removing all lenses before sleep, even extended-wear types, because the infection risk is significantly higher during overnight wear.
Do I still need annual exams?
Yes, absolutely. Annual comprehensive eye exams are essential for contact lens wearers. During these visits, your eye doctor checks not just your prescription, but also evaluates your corneal health, looks for signs of complications from lens wear, and ensures your lenses still fit properly as your eyes naturally change over time. Contact lens prescriptions legally expire after one year because your eye health can change significantly in that timeframe. These exams also screen for serious conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal problems that have no early symptoms.
What's the difference between daily, bi-weekly, and monthly lenses?
The main differences lie in the lens material, replacement schedule, and maintenance required. Daily disposable lenses are single-use lenses that require no cleaning—you simply discard them each night, making them the most hygienic option. Bi-weekly and monthly lenses require diligent daily care with appropriate cleaning solutions. Daily lenses typically offer the lowest risk of infection and are ideal for people with allergies or those who wear lenses only occasionally. Monthly and bi-weekly lenses are often more cost-effective for full-time wearers.
How should I care for my contact lenses?
Proper lens care is critical to preventing eye infections. Always wash and dry your hands before handling lenses. Use only fresh contact lens solution—never water, saliva, or expired solution. Rub and rinse your lenses even if using a "no-rub" solution. Replace your lens case every three months and let it air-dry between uses. Never top off old solution. Remove your lenses before swimming, showering, or entering hot tubs. If you experience redness, pain, discharge, or vision changes, remove your lenses immediately and contact our office.
Can anyone wear contact lenses?
Most people can successfully wear contact lenses, but they're not suitable for everyone. Conditions like severe dry eye, chronic eye infections, or certain corneal irregularities may make contact lens wear difficult. However, modern lens technology has expanded options considerably—we now have specialty lenses for dry eyes, astigmatism, presbyopia, and even irregular corneas. During your contact lens evaluation, we'll assess your eye health, tear quality, lifestyle needs, and manual dexterity to determine if contacts are right for you.
